The Ugly Bread Bakery Review

Why is a good sandwich so expensive these days? Scratch that , not even a good one. Far too many times we find ourselves paying way too much for what amounts to a soggy piece of cheese, a limp tomato and excessive mayo between too-long-in-the-packet bread. All in the name of lunch.
You can imagine our delight at the focaccia stuffed to the brim with a plethora of fillings, the toasted mezzalunas, the hearty pizzas at Nottingham’s own Ugly Bread Bakery. This temple of carbs is piled high with the sandwich of your dreams.
This is lofty praise, we know, but it really is all true. The bakery offers a massive range of fresh ingredients for veggies and carnivores alike; goats cheese, sun dried tomatoes, salami, olives, basically everything under the Mediterranean sun. The bread itself is newly baked, and they cook the pizzas literally in front of you.

We got two toasted mezzalunas, one filled with brie and caramelised onions, the other mozerella and sundried tomatos, cut them in half and shared. We sat on very comfy sofas in the cafes lounge area, the walls of which are etched in graffiti Italian monkeys. Interesting.

On a sunny day, though, the best place to sit is the chairs by their huge windows on the first floor. A cup of coffee, one of their pistachio Italian cakes, and a few hours to people watch the outside Hockley street makes a perfect lunchtime.
Now the prices are what you’d typically expect, so for their mezzaluna we paid £3.50. Keep in mind that’s almost the price of Sainsbury packaged sandwiches. When we say your moneys worth at Ugly Bread Bakery, we mean it, we were stuffed.
Broke students, don’t worry, they offer a really great student meal deal of a pizza, side and drink for £6. There are always deals on, so if your purse is empty this is one place you can still lunch.
There are two locations of the bakery, one at Hockley, and one on Old Market street. We would personally recommend the Hockley location for sitting in, and the Old Market one for grabbing a bite to go.
So support an independent business and support your stomach. This place is far from Ugly.
